The board in the machine I am using is a VX series and only takes up to a 200MHz
chip. A second hand one should cost about $100 and mine wont handle MMX.
Consider an upgrade to a Cyrix M II /333 - these are available new on a
motherboard with both AT and ATX power connections for about $150 - maybe less
at the Sunday Markets at North Rocks ( or the market at Penrith) and provide
quite a boost in speed - you will need some SD100 RAM as well. Better value
than chasing a second hand chip I think.
I don't know the stats, but I have had one of these running against a PII 300
and it seemed quite a bit faster.
Stay well and happy
