I have diald working quite happily at home. It's been running under light use
for months at a time.
First, which version of diald are you using? And which kernel version?
Second, I presume the changes you were making were to the config. What did you
do?
Finally, an alternative to diald is the -demand option to pppd. Check the pppd
man page for details (I may have the exact option wrong - I don't have doco
handy). This will simply dial out when traffic appears and hang up after the
link has been idle for a configurable length of time. AFAIK it can't do the
fancy stuff diald does - i.e. allow differing idle times for different
protocols, ignore other protocols completely etc.
