My experiences:

1. Travan drives work, and the units are relatively cheap. However the cost
of tapes is a killer. 4/8G Travan tapes cost around $60 while 4/8G DAT tapes
are <$20. You are almost always guaranteed to be ahead with a DAT drive
after about 20 tapes. Only buy Travan drive if you're only need couple of
tapes .... in which case you should probably buy CDR.

2. You cannot go past DAT tapes for:
        - cheap media
        - bulk erasability
        - portability (sending people stuff on tape)

3. The bang for buck (for drive and media) decreases as the capacity of tape
increases. Only get as small drive as you need. For linux systems 2/4G (90m
tapes) drive will often suffice.

4. I've installed HP Surestore SCSI TR-4, Connor CT8000S TR-4, and Wangdat
3100dx DAT drives under Redhat 6.x without any problems. After the drives
get picked up by SCSI BIOS, they just auto-magically appear as /dev/st0.

5. Paying more money for DAT drive may get you:
        - improved reliability
        - speed
        - compression

6. If you going to take the drive between systems, external drive is
probably better idea. I've had good experiences with Sony external DAT drive
(mostly under NT though.)

Cheers,

Dave
