Bad example (see Andrea Dworkin). If Optus are really
portscanning customers routinely, then you should be reporting
them to the AFP. Singtel got in the poo for portscanning
customers (to check their customers computers were secure),
and AFAIK Australian law should be similar in that regard.
If you are trying to connect to services you aren't authorized
to use, technically you are breaking the law. The fact that
many ISPs etc. do it as part of diagnosing a fault etc. is
something that can be overlooked, but doing it to customers
en masse shouldn't.
