I think you'll find that the majority of Linux users (myself included)
prefer hardware modems. Still worthwhile making a driver for your
software modem.

In general, it is possible, but a pain, to use closed source drivers with
any Linux distro. Even Creative had trouble getting their closed source
Soundblaster Live drivers to work, once the source was opened they were
much more readily accepted.
SLUG members use many different distributions. RedHat, SUSE, and debian
all seem to be very popular, based on number of mentions. I'm sure
other distros are also popular, I often use Mandrake, for example.

The only suggestion I'd make is that you open source the driver, it will
mean much less work for your team, and improve the quality of the driver.
Closed source drivers are not well accepted by the community, and tend
not to work very well.
