A few observations...

1. It's in a regional paper, so I'm going to presume it's at a regional
location (confirmed in a SLUG email - it's at Charles Stuart Uni). Regional
IT jobs are (almost) always going to pay less than a similar job in the
city.

2. Given the odd numbers in salary range, I'd presume this is either at
a Uni or a government department (again, confirmed, it's at CSU). Uni's
have always had weird pay rates (the good old HEW levels) and jobs titles
(from memory I used to be a "Computer Services Officer" or something like
that when I was a sysadmin at a uni) which really don't match the rest of
the IT world. Of course, uni's do offer different conditions than most
work environments.

If you look through jobs ads for SysAdmins in the SMH or Tuesdays Australian
you'll find jobs going for anywhere between about $40k and $140k, normally
asking for roughly the same requirements. Best I can work out they must
fill the jobs at the lower end of the scale, and I'm presuming they are
filled with less experienced people, because there's no way someone with
more experience would even apply.

So what sould be the going rate? It's depends on the person, the job,
the responsibility, etc. I'd say that the $40k-140k is probably a valid
range. My first job in a sysadmin-style role was at HEW level 6.1 ($32,250
or something like that from memory). Today I wouldn't even look at anything
with less than 6 figures in it.

  Scott.
