Hi all,
The "six million dollar" machine (the new SLUG box, going live soon) is a
bit of an unhappy chappy. Kevin was kindly hosting it for us at Oceania.net,
but the connection kept dropping out, and at best, it was "unreliably up".
Having pounded on it for a day or two, it looks like the network card wasn't
playing nice. So, of course, I tried another...
The test:
Transfer openss*.rpm (OpenSSL and OpenSSH)
Transfer rh62.iso
Ping every second for a minute
All cards are PCI.
The results:
Netgear (Tulip): Performs fine for a while, then slows down to
(original card) tens of bytes/s for large transfer. Pings fine.
This came with the box, and was the one running
on Kevin's network.
Realtek 8029: Same. Pings a bit more erratic. My old NIC.
EtherExpress Pro: Speedy gonzales. No problems whatsoever.
Obviously a compatibility problem in there somewhere, but that's not realy
my question or problem...
So, the question is this:
Is there a document or site out there that compares NIC performance under
Linux? Surely there's a fair difference not just in the quality of the card,
but in the drivers as well.
Which cards are best supported due to the openness of their manufacturers
and deisgners?
So as not to bore the list with opinions, if anyone has preferences on
different brands or recommendations, please respond to me only. The 'deeper'
questions are probably more interesting for the list.
Lastly (less importantly), whilst pursuing this test, an interesting thought
occured to Chuck and myself - how fun would it be to hack a soundcard
network? Mic->Spk, Spk->Mic and SQUEAL! ;) Has anyone done this already?
Sure, it would be more processor intensive than having a couple of NICs, but
it would be FUN! Just a silly idea...
