well, as silly as it sounds. One of the ideas that came out of
the linmodems discussion on linux-kernel ages ago involved treating
[wl]inmodems as /dev/dsp style devices like soundcards, the
rationale being that seeing as all the real work (such as ... er...
modulation and demodulation) has been removed from the "modem",
it's really not much more than a sound card that happens to ouput
to a telephone line.
the drivers you'd need to write for the "soundcard network" might
not be that much different to linmodem drivers in terms of how
they encode and decode data. have a look at the "Related Software"
links on linmodems.org -- there are some "generic linmodem" drivers
in development that may do exactly what you want, though you may
need to tie them in to the soundcard. have fun :)
