There's a few ways to do it. Depending on your phone, you may be able to
get software which will allow you to send messages via the phone. You will
need a cable (or IR setup) to do it though.
Alternatively both Telstra and Vodafone (but not Optus) have dialup SMS
gateways. Cost is generally about the same as a local call per message
(they are actually charged at mobile rates, but it's a very short call).
