The fvwm2 should be *much* faster than E or Sawmill. I have
a 33MHz, 32MB RAM 486 at home which runs fvwm or fvwm2 at
quite OK speed. That sort of machine would not be useful
running E. Use fvwm with a plain background and 256 colour
icons. I tend to go for the fvwm with Motif appearance and
eschew the fvwm95 crap. If its not faster than E ie if its
not usable then something else is wrong. Whats the swap
space?

A 486 is too slow for Netscape 4.7 so grab Netscape 2.0 from
the depths of the Netscape archives. You'll prob have to
hunt for it on ftp.netscape.com or at
aarnet.edu.au/pub/netscape.
Alternatively try Opera (www.operasoft.com). Renders the
screen much faster than Netscape 4.7 but don't know how it
compares to 2.0
