I would have to agree with Jeff, from the user's perspective, the desktop is
the main thing, and all distro's look the same.
>From the sysadmin point of view, different story. I would go with Debian or
SuSE. I started with an old 11 floppy distribution from the UK, then
slackware, and then settled with Red Hat for years, until too many things came
broken (read incompatible libraries etc) with Red Hat. I was spending too much
time fixing things, so I settled on SuSE, which I can recommend as a quality
distro from a sysadmin point of view, although Debian would probably be just as
good judging from the comments on this list.
