Another reason to do this is you quickly find out where your solutions
just don't work in the way that you tell your customer they do. If Sun
decide to only use StarOffice they will have to make it good enough to use
in the business environemnent. This can increase the functionality and
stability of software which benefits their customers (us) and therefore
gives them a return.
The more Linux companies use their own stuff the more they will end up
contributing back to the community. For example if a Linux company needs
some closed source software that costs $30,000 they could at the same time
start to fund the development of an OS alternative and switch over when
the functionality meets their requirement.
Problem is that technology companies are well known for not praticing what
the preach. The software companies I have worked for were always lacking
at using software for their own benefit.
