I would not consider using x86 for a large database.
Yes, it will work, but the performance will not be very nice.
Go look at a 64 bit wide machine like an Alpha or a Sun.
Sounds like they were using RAID 0 just to get the effective disk size up.
They could go AIX, Linux, any Unix but whatever they choose should support
the DB.
Porting the app to another OS / platform should be OK but don't let them
port the database. If it's in Oracle, leave it in Oracle etc.
Use a proper RAID (1 or 5). Get a database administrator (not the same as a
sysadmin).
This was argued on /. last week I think.
