I was going to reply with the same advice.
Eg. if it's "mission critical" etc etc I'd go for a Sun E250
or 450 (or more depending on requirements) running Solaris,
storage array, fibre channel disks and so on and Sun support.
x86 stuff is for when you're trying to save money, and linux
isn't quite there yet as an "enterprise" OS and won't be for
a while yet IMO.
