Oh that means I missed out..
We are the database people and it's jBASE which does run on Linux so there
is no porting issue, actually quite well over SCO and NT.. I can tell you a
story or 2 about Linux vs NT performance but that's another story.
I was more inclined to use possibly a RAID 0/1 so I get the performance and
the redundency of the RAID with 2 RAID controllers to handle SCSI failures.
This is if it's in the one box though otherwise I'd have sepearate machines
with the drives and so on..
How good is Red Hat 6.1/6.2 and it's RAID..? jBASE has only been ported to
RedHat 6.1 and recently 6.2

I would not consider using x86 for a large database.
Yes, it will work, but the performance will not be very nice.
Go look at a 64 bit wide machine like an Alpha or a Sun.
Sounds like they were using RAID 0 just to get the effective disk size up.
They could go AIX, Linux, any Unix but whatever they choose should support
the DB.
Porting the app to another OS / platform should be OK but don't let them
port the database. If it's in Oracle, leave it in Oracle etc.
Use a proper RAID (1 or 5). Get a database administrator (not the same as a
sysadmin).
This was argued on /. last week I think.
