Actually you can get a version of Sendmail for NT with both MTA and MDA
(POP3 only) included. My problem with that is I don't consider it an
ISP-worthy system unless it supports IMAP.
I don't think 'being free' was a big (enough) selling point for large ISPs,
otherwise Telstra would have just wiped their NT boxes and put Linux (or
xBSD) on them. I'm sure HP cut them a pretty nice support deal for the
changeover, not to mention took the CEO out on a few nice lunches.
Notes and Exchange don't work well with Sendmail because they provide in
themselves MTA and MDA (and an MUA if you want it). Basically I excluded
Notes and Exchange because they provide way more than what an ISP needs and
the license fees would kill the cost structure. Notes/Exchange are good for
what they do, but ISP email isn't part of it.
