Hi Terry,
Come to think of it I had this problem too.
What I did was edited /etc/modules.conf and had a good look at references to
/dev/CDROM and to the ALSA sound drivers.
I found that at the end of the config file, the modules were listed twice,
and IIRC there was one set of lines that appeared to have been inserted in
the wrong place, one line out of where they should've been.
I think the config tool is broken here, YAST is fine but YAST2 seems only to
work once then shoots itself when configuring the sound drivers a second or
third time. Of course SuSe may have a patch up there already...
Sorry I can't be more specific but I did this a couple of months ago and I'm
not near that machine atm.
Just go look through the config file again and play "spot the error" near
the end, and at the top where the devices are listed.
Cheers,
Jill.

I believe I've solved this problem. Found "alias sound off" in
/etc/modules.conf and changed it to "alias sound on" and now my mixer
can be accessed, BUT now the CD player can not access /dev/cdrom. It was
working before.
