The reason I began to (try) to use linux was the fact that there are so
many programming languages and compilers etc available, and I wanted to
begin to learn to program. Under Windoze this would have cost $$, under
linux it's free.

I have decided on Python myself, and have purchased the following two
books:-

"Sams Teach Yourself Python in 24 Hours"
and
"The Quick Python Book"

While these books are helpful, I do not find them particularly friendly for
somebody new to programming.

The only programming that I have ever undertaken was in Basic (both MS and
Commodore64) and under Open Access Database (under Windows), which was
pretty much Basic/SQL programming.

Can somebody suggest a better book or books for a Python and programming
beginner?

In the mean time I am searching the Web for Python programs from whose
source code I can learn. Any suggestions here also will be appreciated. I
have always found it easier to learn by example at first, then tackle the
books later.

Thanks

Bill
