Thanks all. I will have a look at Lilypond and MusicTex.

I need something to churn out some music for kids to learn from, i.e.
simple stuff. I made the mistake of showing a bunch of kids here how to
play twinkle twinkle little star on the keyboard and now after school I
have a few coming back for more lessons. These kids are leaning to read
or write, so they are a bit behind the eight ball about learning to read
music. some are managing a bit, but so long as the words to sing and
notes to play are there, something recognisable comes out (that's my
level - the kids are better {:-)}}}

MusicTex appeals as a long term way of entering all the music I play and
keeping Tex skills current.

Brahms and Thud are beyond my understanding = no squeaks out.
