The O'Reilly books are fine for people who need them - if you don't know
perl, and have never programmed before, you start with Learning Perl. If
you've programmed before, but not in Perl, you read Programming Perl. Then
you progress onto the DBI documentation, and even possibly the O'Reilly
Perl/DBI book.
Of course, if you've never used SQL databases properly, you should also find
a good SQL Primer and read the User/Programming guides for the appropriate
database.
DBI itself is as logical as Java's JDBC and VB's RDO - and is much better
than RDO since it supports variable binding. [something which is the Right
Thing(tm) and JDBC is also capible of it].
