The issue is that my previous "manager" convinced the company that the
only Sun to buy was e450s, and they have quite a few of them now! Nobody
ever considered low end suns... (except me but I arrived too late)...

M$/Intel have used this as why their "products" are so much more cost
efficient than suns. I cant really fight that so I'm suggesting
Linux/Intel...

no, can't help sorry just wanted to mention that mainly
being concerned about the cost of the hardware is very
weird!  Buying hardware is almost always the least of
the costs (for a company), particularly if you're
presumably talking about low end Suns (since you're
considering replacing it/them with PCs).

If they're suspicious of replacing it/them with linux,
you could suggest free/openBSD - it has more of a
"serious" image than linux (and is suposedly good at
web serving etc, given it's pretty popular with ISPs).
