Easier said than done when the network card is not working :-(
However I went and had a look at that file and found that it had *all* the 
entries I had tried as aliases, ie eth0, eth1 and two lines of options 
showing interrupts. Deleted all except the eth0 line, rebooted and bingo!

Thanks a lot, all is working again.
