Doug,

There's not much information to assist you with - we need more information.
Like:
* How did you install the pppoe software?
* What version is it? Is it RP-PPPoE?
* How do you start the ADSL link?
* What is the result of "ifconfig -a"
* What is the result of "netstat -rn"

For one, that is not normally how you would start the ADSL connection.
The pppoe driver has sent a message out "hello is anyone there?", and
received a response from an ADSL concentrator "I'm here, this is my ethernet
address". That's only one part of the story however.
I think if the ppp daemon is dying, sounds like your username and/or password
is incorrect. Did you specify your username as "username@bigpond" ?
You could have a look at my ADSL web page http://www.becsta.net/adsl.html
which will describe in great detail how to install/configure/run the ADSL
link.
If you are using a 2.4 kernel, you could try looking at Crossfire's ADSL web
site http://kitsumi.xware.cx/tech/adsl-2.4.html. He goes into the nitty
gritty of patching the 2.4 kernel to run the ADSL link natively in the kernel.
Cheers,
