actually its telstra's fault again:

rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0x95 <magic 0x5ac2637e> <mru 1500> <auth chap MD5>]
sent [LCP ConfNak id=0x95 <auth pap>]
rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0x96 <magic 0x5ac2637e> <mru 1500> <auth pap>]
sent [LCP ConfAck id=0x96 <magic 0x5ac2637e> <mru 1500> <auth pap>]

telstra asks for chap, you refuse and ask for pap, *then telstra agrees*

you just have to not ask for pap. (apparently pap sometimes even works
too)

MTU/MRU negotiation is similarly broken, don't ask for anything more
than 1492, `cos it will be accepted (and not work).

another bug i raised with telstra during the "trial".
