At different times, I've had similar problems with older distros with
various HW and it has been;
- first install just didn't write mbr properly,
-installing mbr to /dev/hda1 instead of /dev/hda,
- used LBA mode or AUTO on a dud bios,
- needed to use "linear" mode
I usually try them in that order.
