Thanks Mark,

I got it going by displacing the connector so there is an extra socket
header pin on each side of the scsi connector on the drive, i.e. mating the
centre of the header. This involved breaking the sides of the scsi connector
on the drive so it would fit. I am not sure what the extra pins are for I
suspect that it is either for id selection or term power ?

It is also interesting that sparc station the prom monitor command
probe-scsi hung whereas if I did a net boot to get my image via tftpboot and
when it booted the kernel it recognised the drive and I was able to format
my partitions.

Now all I have to do is setup a NFS server to get it to see the cdrom so I
can continue the install.

Isn't Linux fun.

It could be similar to my old SGI system that used a drive sled. The sled
had 2
internal connectors for scsi and ID that plugged into into the drive. The
sled
then plugged into a single ribbon cable back to the motherboard. This
arrangement allowed the ID to be set by the system.
The other (although unlikely) possibility is that the other wires carry
power.
