I used to get old Deskpro 486's and Pentium's from work when they were gonna throw them out and stick Debian on them... never had any problems. I usually nuked the Compaq partitions as well; seems to work fine without it - I think it's diagnostics not BIOS stuff. IMHO Compaq's are good boxes - built to last. Just pray you never have to get spare parts... they once told me it was going to take three months to get a serial card replaced. Three months!
