Something which bit a friend of mine for a few hours the other
day was that he was missing a "*" in his /etc/ppp/pap-secrets (or
/etc/ppp/chap-secrets) file -- so make sure you have a "*" in
that file.  It's pretty easy to overlook.  His symptoms were
exactly the same as yours: Windows appears to connect to the
Linux box fine, and the icon actually shrinks to the taskbar as
it would if you had a normal connection, but it drops out
right after that with an authentication error.
