I started out on slackware (as I'm sure many people did) and found it a
good distro in comparison to the commercial unixes available at the
time.

However, things have changed a LOT in these last 8 years, I once read a
quote from one of the head guys at slackware who said that 'Slackware is
a distribution for people that are already running Slackware.  If you
are new to linux, use ANY other distro'....

I'm sure that was meant light-heartedly - but many a true word......

I won't recommend any distributions because that will start a holy war.
*cough* debian *cough*...... Who said that?????

Seriously though - if you want the power of slackware in a sane way, you
could do much worse, just make sure you base your choice on an informed
decision (ie - try a few distro's and make your OWN choice)
