This isn't entirely true - there are drivers available for Conexant HSF modems <http://www.mbsi.ca/hsflinux/>, same sort of thing as the Ltmodem drivers: half binary, half source. This approach does seem to work reasonably well with the Ltmodem drivers anyway. I've had them working on every 2.4.x kernel and a number of 2.2.x kernels, even with various patches such as the preempt one, devfs.
