There have been a series of posts on comp.text.pdf about this issue. I
base my statement on that. My current understanding is that Distiller for
Unices has been ditched, and that the reader is in doubt.

That assumes that this is a single vendor field. The spec is open, people
can write their own readers -- for instance xpdf and gv.
