Does the XFree log file in /var/log give you any clues? There should also be an .X.err file in your home directory also. These together with /var/log/Messages may give you a clue as to the exact problem. The solution may be as easy as removing the config dot file for your window manager and letting it regenerate on startup, but without more info it is hard to tell.
