Thanks Jill,

While you were sending me that, I got X Window working by getting root
to copy a .Xauthority from another user to this account.

It opened a blank screen with the big X , and I wrote a .xsession to get
a window manager. Just to be sure I logged out and tried to get back in,
same problem. Had to repeat the borrow-.Xauthority routine.

First gnome app I tried sent a message
  Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by C library
even though I've reverted the locale to be the same as the other users'.
I think I'm going to have to know more about locales than I thought
necessary, to get right through this problem.

Meanwhile thanks for `fuser'. The /tmp processes seem to be quite ordinary.
