I was getting used to my Ximian-Gnome Potato system when I thought I'd
check my mail last Wednesday. I had three workspaces open under Sawfish
- one running bash, one Mozilla-Mail, the last Evolution. I hit
send/receive in Evolution and - after downloading 4-5 messages - it
crashed. I tried with Mozilla - same result. Rebooting halted with a
message that there had been damage to my kernel and a line of hex
addresses. Subsequent attempts to boot have ended with the X-server
coming up with a graphical login screen, correct entry of name and
password, a long pause and then the empty login screen again.

I have tried to boot via floppy but always get the same situation as
above. I have not been able to get into console mode ('Alt' during
login?) but if there is a kernel problem with login it should not change
anything.

When I realized the Debian drive was not functioning I rebooted into the
XP drive and checked <www.thepaperboy.com> where there was a reference
to the Klez.e virus which had activated itself that day. I updated virus
definitions and successfully used OutLook.

Although Klez.e is aimed at Windows addresses and ICQ files, it is also
programmed to delete files with varied suffixes which may have affected
the Linux kernel. I could be wrong on this - but it all started with a
routine send/receive operation in Evolution.

Unless anyone has a better idea, I'll do a re-install next week ... it's
frustrating when you intend to do to do other things.

Cheers,

Adam Bogacki
