I installed mandrake and sound worked fine.

I pulled my debian woody system across to the harddisk, I installed
sndconfig and it proclaims that things don't work no messages.

 The following error occurred
 playing the sample:

Nothing follows...

I can install the modules myself modprobe es1371, zero messages,
dumping the modules lsmod it appears to be installed fine.

gandalf:/usr/src/linux# modprobe es1371
gandalf:/usr/src/linux# lsmod
Module Size Used by Not tainted
es1371 30080 0 (unused)
soundcore 3844 4 [es1371]
ac97_codec 9696 0 [es1371]

The next funny is that alsaconf gives me a setup option and it says the
it cannot find snd module. I have everything in sound enabled for my
compile.

Loading driver:
No ALSA driver installed
Starting ALSA sound driver (version none):modprobe: Can't locate module
snd
 failed.
Setting the PCM volume to 100% and the Master output volume to 50%
No ALSA driver installed
Could not initialize the mixer, the card was probably
not detected correctly.

Looking there appears to need a /lib/modules/2.4.18/alsa directory which
does not exist.

Looking in google there is a suse page that says that alsa was broken
and here are the new packages.

http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/swgkern_ensoniq5880.html

I dont really want to muddy my system with an alien rpm package does
anyone have any suggestions.

Thanks
KenF
