Since you say your Red Hat machine is connecting directly, it is likely that Optus's dialup IPs (all of them) are listed on the Realtime Blackhole List (or on the Dialup Users List http://www.mail-abuse.org/dul/). It is not uncommon for this to happen. The website states "We accomplish this by preventing trespassing by mass e-mailers who offload unsolicited e-mail, aka: spam, using direct connections to their victims' mail servers without using their ISP's mail server as a relay or gateway."
