Did you re-run lilo after putting these extra commands in (e.g. from the
command prompt as root type 'lilo')?  vga=ask should do it for you.

Maybe that was taking about frame buffer support, which is a little
different to changing the vga mode (but worth investing time in setting up
-- i find it much easier on the eyes, and I can run my console at
1200x1024).
