Had the same problem with Mandrake 9.0.  My only solution was to reinstall the 
system and ONLY set up the modem during the install. Leave the network card 
till afterwards. This should solve the problem. I think it has something to 
do with the nsswitch.conf file, but I'm not sure.
netstat -nr   will print out the kernel routing table and may give you a clue 
to the problem.
