After replacing my motherboard it's been almost 3 weeks with no system
crashes, even doing all the things that used to crash Linux, including
running X in 1600x1200. :-)

But sound no longer works. I suspect because there's some sort of
unsupported sound system on the motherboard in addition to the
SoundBlaster card.

I'm running a 2.4.20-ac10 kernel (needed to fix up PCI problems in
the Intel support chips, I gather), which I've compiled up with the same
set of options as earlier kernels. dmesg shows this:

Intel 810 + AC97 Audio, version 0.24, 01:21:08 Nov 11 2002
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 00:1f.5 to 64
i810: Intel ICH4 found at IO 0xc400 and 0xc000, MEM 0xea001000 and 0xea002000, IRQ 17
i810: Intel ICH4 mmio at 0xd08b1000 and 0xd08b3000
i810_audio: Primary codec has ID 2
i810_audio: Audio Controller supports 6 channels.
i810_audio: Defaulting to base 2 channel mode.
i810_audio: Resetting connection 0
i810_audio: Connection 0 with codec id 2
ac97_codec: AC97 Audio codec, id: ALG32(ALC650)
i810_audio: AC'97 codec 2 supports AMAP, total channels = 6
Intel 810 + AC97 Audio, version 0.24, 01:21:08 Nov 11 2002

which repeats 4 times. If I run sndconfig it reports:

                    lqqqqqqqqu PCI Probe Results tqqqqqqqqk
                    x x

                    x lqqqqk x
                    x x Ok x x

If I guess at the soundblaster settings, it reports:

x The following error occurred running the modprobe program: x
      x x
      x /lib/modules/2.4.20-pre10-ac1/kernel/drivers/sound/sb.o: x
      x init_module: No such device x

      x /lib/modules/2.4.20-pre10-ac1/kernel/drivers/sound/sb.o: insmod x
      x sound-slot-0 failed x

Now, /lib/modules/2.4.20-pre10-ac1/kernel/drivers/sound/sb.o does
exist, so I'm wondering whether there's some kind of conflict between
the motherboard and the sound blaster.

The motherboard is a "PX845G", which says it has an "AC'97 Sound Codec
onboard", compatible with AC'97 2.2 specification, 6 channels slot
selectable DAC output, 3D stereo enhancement, digital S/PDIF i/o.

Any advice on sensible next steps? If I disable the AC97 codec via the
BIOS, and re-run sndconfig, are things likely to suddenly just start
working?
