So, bochs can run windows 98, and the install process is really easy,
but you end up with a slow computer that can run windows 98 at 640x480
in 16 colours. It's quite stable (for me anyway), and it does what it
says it will. I've not tried networking on it though.

Another project that might be worth looking at is umlwin32:

    http://umlwin32.sourceforge.net/

I've not tried that, but you would get a real linux virtual machine on
your windows box. That coupled with the cygwin X port is probably enough
to start getting work done.

Also, if you're looking at running win98 only, then win4lin is worth a
look. Much cheaper than vmware, and it ran faster the last time I
checked it out. It did some other nifty stuff too.
