It could be that /etc/shadow is out of sync compared to /etc/passwd. You can resync with 'pwconv'. But I'ds go with Mike's suggestion. If this is the same machine you've been having problems with in the past, you far better off getting to the real cause of the problem. Reinstall and/or run some hardware diagnostics on it.
