I totally agree, this is a time for SLUG to regroup and refocus.
Actually... thinking about that, maybe it's a time to de-group and
re-focus. SLUG is too general. It's like having a "car users group" in
that it covers too many people with vastly differing interests. I guess
Ken spelled it out by suggesting a coders group.
Although I realise that Grant was being (at least mostly) humourous,
I can agree with some of the underlying sentiments.
Perhaps SLUG needs to have more SIGs and more meetings with just the
special interest groups involved in each one. e.g we now have a
Debian sig, maybe we need a techo/hobbyist/programmer SIG and a
business community/urban desktop SIG, etc. If nothing other than
so people can get back to meetings with the friendly faces that
they know.
I am national coordinator of another large-ish semi-hobbyist /
semi-professional / pseudo-academic / special interest group
organisation and one thing I've learned is that it takes all
types, and with 2000+ members we don't all have the same interests
or see eye to eye.
Having said that, thanks to Tony and Jeff for a job well done
to date in what was obviously for them a trying situation.
