I'm no expert but it seems to me that there is something wrong with your video settings.
when you build mandrake it will ask a question as to whether you want to boot into a GUI (or is it xwindows)
anyway for now say no. boot to the prompt and login as root. then run xfconfig or drakconf (someone correct me here what the correct executable is...)
this will allow you to configure the graphics card for the correct settings via trial and error.
Once set correctly you can test x by typing startx
you can get it to automatically boot to a GUI by editing the file /etc/inittab and look for a line saying runlevel 3 and make it a runlevel 5 instead.
