I've had the network access reconfigured so that the remote linux machine now has a real-world ip
and the problem disappeared.
I'd tested the pptp-client being nat'd but in the test case it was behind another Linux box and all
worked ok. However at the site in question, the nat'ing was being done by an ADSL modem.
Something to keep in mind.
