Hi Sluggers....
I am a Windows person (not by choice) who has toyed with Linux. I use Win XP at work, and Win 98 SE at home.
I have tried various types of Linux on the 'dark-side' of my home computer (with Win 98)...incl Red Hat, and Mandrake. I am reasonably computer - literate...but am no 'nerd/expert'...and have no interest in tinkering under the hood of any o/s.
I am on a tight budget and have a love/hate relationship with WinDoze and M/Soft. My main use of computers at home is internet/email...and a bit of music, word processing etc...
To illustrate my ambivalence with MS, I use TheBat or Mozilla Thunderbird instead of Outlook Distress for email...and I use Mozilla Firefox instead of Int Explorer.
My internet connection is the cheapest ADSL package offered by TPG ($19.95/200mb month). The modem is a D-Link ADSL modem DSL-302G connected by USB (as directed by TPG).
I have read very good reports of Xandros 2. Other Linux distros weren't 'good enough' for a non-experts like me to make the break from Windows.... but I am wondering if Xandros might be the one...
HOWEVER!... a bit of preliminary homework...incl looking at some screenshots of Xandros....suggests to me that I am going to have problems transferring my current ADSL set-up over to Xandros...or any other Linux distro... (It appears that Xandros may cater well for dial-up internet access...or ADSL via ethernet rather than USB.....)
Any advice on this..especially re the problems I am anticipating with respect to ADSL/internet connection??
Many thinks to SLUG (home page) for pointing me to Lancum. I was toying with taking the risk and coughing up ~$80 for Std Xandros...or ~ $130 for deluxe Xandros.... but I see I can get the open circulation version from Lancum for ~$7.70...
I am hoping also that Xandros might work for my wife...who hates computers!! (really...she mainly hates me spending so much time on computers...and sees what frustration they can cause.. :-) )
Bye for now....and thanks in anticipation....
SteveL
PS Very cold today up here on the Northern Tableands of NSW...but...'could be worse...I could live in the central tablelands..! Ugh!!
