Dear SLUG

I have had a spectacular lack of success with installing Xandros Open
Circulation version 2.01 ( which I got from Lankum, Sydney...lest you
think I stuffed up the download etc... ;-).

My computer is a dual boot HP Brio BA 600 (I think), with a 14 G hard
drive, with Windows 98 SE on part, and Linux on the other.

Installing Xandros as per instruction on the Xandros website ('getting
started') did not work. I restarted the computer with the Xandros CD in
the CD-ROM drive....and the computer read the CD, loaded the kernel and
modules etc... then asked me to remove the CD and press enter. Each time
I did this, the computer booted up from LILO, which is my boot loader
from when I installed Mandrake 9.0 some months ago. (At one stage I
tried to get Window's loader back -using fdsik/ mbr....but this didn't
work...so I had to reinstall Mandrake so I could get LILO back (This
gives me the option of going to Mandrake, Windows, floppy or Failsafe).

I then made a floppy Xandros boot disk, and tried that as well. Still I
could not get to the Xandros installation window. I also tried the
Shift Menu...and tried the various set up procedures...(admittedly I
didn't know what to do with Restore or Custom) ..all to no avail. Each
time I was asked after a while to remove the Xandros CD and press enter.
Each time I was taken back to the boot loader, which opened up Mandrake
or Windows (depending on my choice).

Then I tried getting rid of LILO from my drive. Fdisk /mbr still did
not work, so I installed Red Hat 8.0 over the top of Mandrake, knowing I
would have the option of GRUB as well as LILO as the loader. I chose
GRUB...and went thru the routine of trying to instal Xandros again: same
result.

So, I can't instal Xandros (supposedly dead easy), but I can instal
Mandrake or Red Hat. I am able to instal Windows as well. I think Mt
Gates would say there is an obvious answer to my problems.... ;-)

I may post this onto the Xandros forum as well.

Even if I do get Xandros going, I then have the obstacle of getting it
to work with a USB ADSL modem (D-Link ADSL 302G. Yes...it has an
ethernet option as well...but I am not sure if the ethernet is working
on my computer...tho it has an ethernet port...)...
