Actually you need to run PPPoE to establish a connection. Exetel I know give you a static IP address.
For me I can't get broadband any other way than through a wireless or satellite provider. The most useful tool is the Navini diagnostics tool for unwired. It tells me signal strength, how far from base station, which basestation etc. Check out http://www.ozunwired.com/ (I think). It works fine with me with Linux. My only issue is that it is slow due to me living next to a big hill which blocks a clear site to the base station. I have plans to get a green light very soon.
