How have you got faxq configured? All I did was use "faxq modem" to launch
the process. "modem" is the character device in the dev directory

Yes. At least, it appears to Do The Right Thing for me when I need to
send
a fax, and I've got much the same setup as you are describing (bog stock
hylafax).

Since faxq is responsible for scheduling outgoing faxes, I'd check to
ensure
that you've got all the necessary configuration for faxq to do it's job,
such as the allowable times of day for sending faxes and whatnot. Also
try
cranking up the log levels a bit and see if faxq is trying to tell you
anything.
