A PIII 667 or better works fine when playing movies.
To be honest playing DVD's or Divx stuff doesn't need that much grunt.
Even one of those cheap Celeron M laptops you see in the papers will works fine.
If your not sure if it will work, take a knoppix,Gentoo,Ubuntu live CD/DVD with you.
To be honest when buying a laptop I would be more worried about how much ram or if the hardisk is big enough, and isnt a crappy 5200rpm unit with 1mb of cache because this will make a dint in your movie playing/storage ability.
Im a bit of a media buff myself, and to be honest "you need a big hardisk" because you either have a big hardisk, or get used to burning dvd's all the time to recover space.
Screen size and clarity is also a "biggie" if your watching media also the refresh speed, anything over 16ms is going to be a bit short of the mark.
So don't worry about the CPU too much because most modern cpu's are more than enough.
PS seen a few Semperon64(64 bit) laptops running around very cheap, way more grunt that a CeleronM (32 bit) rig.
