Do you un-maximize (restore) it or do you resize it from a maximized state? Are you using metacity or sawfish? I can resize a maximized window in sawfish, not sure about metacity. It may be in auto-expand mode when you first load it up because it is "maximized". Just a guess. I'm using gnome in ubuntu 6.10. No full screen problems with firefox. I launch it manually.
